Vintage Gumball Machine
"Tutti Frutti" Machines
The vintage gumball machine was not the first vending machine. In
fact, it was preceded by nearly 20 years when in 1888, Thomas Adams placed his newly invented coin operated
machines on the platforms of New York Subway stations, and sold his “Tutti Frutti” gum for a penny.
Even though the machines were primitive and very often
malfunctioned, they were successful because of the placement and the number of potential customers.
The very same rules of retailing still apply today. As the saying goes, the three most important
marketing success principles are: "location, location, location".
Gumball
Machines Since 1907
The vintage gumball machine, as many of us
remember it, was initially unveiled in 1907 selling gumballs for a penny. Since then, this kind of dispensing
system has continued to increase in popularity even though the unit price has risen to a quarter, the appeal has
remained.
Collector's Items
During the early 1900s, there were quite a few
companies that started making gumball dispensing machines. Most of those also created groups of authorized
providers in order to maintain a trained team capable of placing the machines and keeping them operational and
filled with product. Today, a vintage gumball machine is a conversation piece and there are multitudes of
collectors willing to pay big bucks for authentic original models in good condition.
Glass Globe Gumball Machine
As you might guess, the most delicate
component of any vintage gumball machine is definitely the glass globe in which the brightly colored gumballs
reside. Even though damaged globes are typically replaced, and such repairs do not substantially detract from the
value, a pristine machine with all original parts will bring a much higher price since they are the most sought
after by serious collectors.
Ford Gum and Machine
Co.
A name that is prominently displayed on many
highly prized vintage gumball machines is the Ford Gum and Machine Co. Ranking among the largest and best known
brands, the company manufactured gum as well as gumball machines beginning in 1913. And, according to their web
site, Ford Gum is still a leader in the manufacture and distribution of gum balls and gum ball machine banks as
well as a private label manufacturer of assorted confections and health-related products.
Variety of Vintage Machines Still
Available
As you will learn in your search, the variety
of vintage gumball machines available today is seemingly unlimited. If you are not already a collector, it's not
too late to start. And if your interest is limited to just having a vintage gumball machine of your own, then you
are in good company. Enjoy your search! And along the way ...have a gumball or two. It seems that nobody can buy
just one gumball.
